Great Wall Motor’s new electric SUV GWM Ora 5 EV is now on sale in Nepal, and a major talking point is its in-house SVOLT “Dragon Armor” battery.

Most EV makers buy batteries from outside suppliers. GWM, instead, uses packs developed and manufactured by its sister company SVOLT, giving the brand closer control over battery quality, safety and reliability, according to the company.

What is the Dragon Armor battery?
According to GWM and SVOLT, the "Dragon Armor" name refers to the internal cell layout and safety venting design of the pack.
- Battery cells are stacked in layers similar to overlapping scales, creating a tightly packed structure.
- The pack incorporates downward venting channels: if abnormal heat or a thermal incident occurs inside the battery, gases and heat are directed downwards out of the pack, not toward the passenger cabin.
- This design acts like extra armor between the battery and occupants and is meant to help reduce the chance of fire or smoke entering the cabin in a worst-case scenario.
In simple terms, the Dragon Armor pack is engineered so that if something goes wrong inside the battery, the system pushes the problem away from the people sitting in the car.

- Ora 5 comes with 7 airbags, modern ADAS safety features, and has achieved 5-star safety ratings in ANCAP and Euro NCAP testing in overseas markets.
