Indian carmaker Tata Motors has confirmed that its popular compact SUV Tata Nexon will go to the South African market under a new name, Tata Osprey, in Q3 2026 (July–September 2026).
New name, same platform
According to the company’s international announcement, the Osprey is essentially the Nexon renamed for South Africa, with the new badge inspired by an osprey, a bird of prey found in different regions of that country.
For buyers, this means the Osprey will sit on the same sub‑4‑metre SUV platform as the current Nexon sold in India, with similar overall dimensions and a five‑seat layout.
- Length around 3,995 mm, wheelbase about 2,498 mm, ground clearance about 208 mm, boot space around 382 litres (as on Nexon)
Engine and gearbox: petrol likely first
South African media reports indicate that the Osprey will start with a petrol powertrain.
- Expected engine: 1.2‑litre, 3‑cylinder turbo‑petrol, about 118 bhp and 170 Nm
- Expected gearboxes: 5‑ or 6‑speed manual, and 7‑speed dual‑clutch automatic
A diesel engine option, which is offered on the Nexon in India, is not expected at launch in South Africa. Tata has also not yet officially confirmed any CNG or electric Osprey variant for that market. Specifications and exact variant mix remain "to be announced" at this stage.
Safety and key features
The Nexon was the first Indian car to achieve a 5‑star Global NCAP safety rating, and the Osprey is expected to use this safety record as a major selling point in South Africa.
Feature highlights are expected to be broadly similar to higher Nexon trims in India, such as:
- 10.25‑inch touchscreen infotainment system (Harman)
- 360‑degree camera and front parking sensors
- Panoramic sunroof (on top variants)
- Wireless phone charging and connected car functions
The exact feature list for each South African trim will only be clear closer to launch.
