Audi’s new entry electric hatchback takes shape
Audi’s next compact electric car, the A2 e-tron, has been caught testing in Europe with minimal disguise. The prototype gives a clearer idea of what buyers can expect from Audi’s new entry point into its EV line-up. The A2 e-tron is set to become Audi's most efficient production model.
According to Audi’s own announcements, the world premiere is planned for autumn 2026, with sales starting in early 2027 in key markets.
Design: modern interpretation of the original A2
The A2 name returns on a small, space-efficient hatchback that is now fully electric.
- Overall shape follows a tall, one-box hatchback profile, recalling the early-2000s A2, but with more crossover-like proportions.
- Spy shots and early sketches show short overhangs, a long wheelbase and a high roofline to maximize cabin space.
- Expect Audi’s latest front-end look with slim daytime running lights, lower-mounted headlights and a closed grille for better aerodynamics.
- At the rear, test cars show a roof spoiler and horizontal tail-lights, likely linked by a light bar, in line with Audi’s current design language.
The A2 e-tron features a drag coefficient of 0.24, the lowest among Audi's compact models, emphasizing its efficiency-focused design.
Platform and powertrain (expected)
Audi has confirmed that the A2 e-tron will sit on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric platform, shared with models such as the next Volkswagen ID.3 Neo.
Technical details are still unofficial, but European reports based on group hardware point to:
- Battery options around 50–58 kWh and up to about 77–79 kWh
- Rear-wheel drive as standard
- Power outputs roughly from 165–170 hp up to around 225–286 hp, depending on variant
- WLTP range potentially up to about 600–630 km, depending on battery and motor
The new source reveals that the A2 e-tron will offer a 61 kWh LFP battery using a cell-to-pack design, achieving 89.6% charging efficiency. It will also support bidirectional charging for Vehicle-to-Load and Vehicle-to-Home functions.
Price positioning: below Q4 e-tron, above ID.3 Neo
In Europe, analysts expect the A2 e-tron to start around EUR 36,000–40,000. That roughly translates to Rs 45–50 lakh before local taxes and duties.
Audi has indicated that the A2 e-tron will be priced above the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo but below the Audi Q4 e-tron. This sets it up as the brand’s new entry-level electric model.
For Nepali buyers, any future import would face customs duties, EV incentives and dealer margins, so final prices could be significantly higher than European figures. Official Nepal pricing and launch plans are not yet announced.
What this means for Nepalese EV shoppers
- The Audi A2 e-tron is emerging as a compact premium EV with long range and a practical hatchback body, aimed at urban and suburban use.
- Its expected range of up to around 649 km WLTP and battery options near 50–80 kWh would place it well above most small city EVs sold in South Asia today.
- If and when it reaches Nepal, it would likely sit below larger Audi electric SUVs (like the Q4 e-tron) in price but still firmly in the premium segment.
For now, Nepali buyers can treat the A2 e-tron as a future option. On paper, it is a premium compact EV that could suit city families and business users looking for range and brand image in a smaller footprint, once Audi’s regional plans become clear.
