Electric vehicle adoption in India reached a significant milestone in September 2026, with EVs accounting for 10.7 percent of total vehicle registrations. Passenger cars saw an 8.5 percent market share, while electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers captured 11.6 percent and 64.9 percent of their respective segments.

This rapid growth has created supply challenges for major manufacturers. Tata Motors, which holds a 41 percent share of the electric passenger vehicle market, reported that bookings have increased 2.5 times since February 2026. The company sold over 47,000 electric units in the second quarter of the fiscal year and aims to reach a monthly production capacity of 1 lakh units by the 2027/28 fiscal year.

  • Maruti Suzuki has opened a dedicated EV plant in Hansalpur, Gujarat, with an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units to produce the e-Vitara SUV.
  • Hero MotoCorp plans to increase its monthly electric two-wheeler production from 15,000 to 45,000 units by the end of the 2026/27 fiscal year.
  • Bajaj Auto targets an 80,000-unit monthly capacity for its Chetak scooter by the end of the 2026/27 fiscal year.
  • TVS Motor has committed to increasing its two-wheeler and three-wheeler production capacity by 15 lakh units by mid-2027.

Supply chain constraints have led to extended wait times for some models, with dealer stock levels for certain brands dropping to less than a week. Companies are now prioritizing battery and raw material procurement to stabilize supply.
