The key Narayanghat–Butwal highway is now in its final construction stage, giving long‑distance travellers some long‑awaited relief.
Engineers from the Narayanghat–Butwal Road Project say work on both sections is around 92% complete, with only safety installations and drainage connections still to be done.
The route covers 113.35 km between Narayanghat and Butwal, split into two contracts: a 65 km eastern section (Narayanghat–Daunne) and a 49 km western section (Daunne–Butwal), both handled by Chinese state‑owned builder China State Construction.
Under the upgrade, the former two‑lane road is now mostly four‑lane. Busy market and settlement stretches are widened to six lanes over about 28 km to ease congestion and improve safety.
The project cost is about Rs 16.99 billion, funded by an 85% concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank and 15% investment from the Government of Nepal.
With the smoother, wider surface, drivers now report around two hours for Narayanghat–Butwal in normal conditions. Authorities still urge careful, disciplined driving on the new high‑speed corridor.
