Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed new details about its upcoming compact SUV often referred to as the Baby Defender, a model that will sit below the current Defender in size but keep the same off-road focus. According to recent reports, the SUV will be offered with both hybrid and fully electric powertrains, rather than being electric-only as first planned.
Hybrid and electric options
JLR has updated its Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform so that it can support hybrid (HEV) as well as battery-electric (BEV) drivetrains. This platform will also underpin future electric SUVs like the next Range Rover Evoque and Discovery Sport.
Industry reports say the Baby Defender, expected to be called Defender Sport in production, will therefore be sold in at least two main versions:
- Hybrid variant: A petrol engine combined with electric assistance for better efficiency and lower emissions compared to a traditional ICE SUV.
- Full-electric variant: A pure EV version aimed at buyers who want zero tailpipe emissions and quieter urban driving.
JLR executives have said the goal is to give customers "as many choices as possible" and that hybrid technology will continue to play an important role during the gradual shift to electric vehicles.
Size and off-road focus
Reports indicate the Baby Defender will be about 4.5 metres long, making it shorter than the existing Defender 90 but still positioned as a capable off-road SUV.
JLR is expected to retain the boxy, upright Defender-style design, while improving aerodynamic efficiency and driving range for the EV version. The company wants this compact Defender to be "one of the most capable off-roaders in its class", so buyers can expect proper ground clearance, all-wheel drive and advanced traction systems rather than a soft-road crossover.
Launch timeline and global production
JLR has not yet revealed the official name or exact launch date of the Baby Defender. However, multiple industry reports and JLR announcements suggest a global debut around 2027, with production planned at the brand's Halewood plant alongside other EMA-based electric SUVs.
For Nepali buyers, this means that a smaller, more city-friendly Defender-branded SUV with hybrid and EV options could become available through Land Rover's regional distributors a few years after its global launch, depending on local demand and import policies.
