Discovery Sport production to stop by end of 2026
Land Rover has confirmed that production of the Discovery Sport will end in December 2026, bringing down the curtain on around 11 years on the global market for the brand’s compact luxury SUV.
According to the announcement, the decision follows declining sales and the impact of the European Union’s new General Safety Regulation 2 (GSR2), which introduces tougher safety technology and crash protection requirements for new vehicles sold in the bloc.
From Freelander replacement to entry-level Land Rover
The Discovery Sport arrived globally in 2015 as Land Rover’s entry-level SUV, replacing the earlier Freelander model. It offered seven-seat practicality in a smaller footprint, which made it one of the more accessible ways to own a Land Rover in many markets.
In 2020, Land Rover gave the Discovery Sport a major update, moving it to a revised platform and refreshing the cabin with newer infotainment, improved materials and added driver-assistance features. This helped the model stay competitive for a few more years against the growing number of premium compact SUVs and crossovers.
Safety rules and EV shift behind the decision
The latest EU safety rules under GSR2 require advanced active safety systems, stronger crash structures and pedestrian protection technologies that are expensive to engineer into an older platform. According to the announcement, these regulatory changes, combined with lower demand for traditional fuel-powered SUVs, have made continuing the Discovery Sport less viable.
Global automakers, including Land Rover, are now putting most of their investment into battery-electric and plug-in hybrid SUVs. Industry reports and company statements indicate that future Land Rover line-ups will increasingly focus on new-generation EV and electrified models, rather than pouring money into long-running combustion-based platforms.
What this means for Nepali buyers
Land Rover does not officially retail new vehicles in Nepal at the same scale as mainstream brands, and Discovery Sport units here typically arrive through parallel imports from Europe, the UK or other markets. For Nepali buyers:
- New Discovery Sport production will stop after December 2026, so fresh stock from overseas will gradually decrease.
- Existing used and reconditioned units will remain on the road, but long-term parts and software support will depend on Land Rover’s global aftersales policies.
- Buyers considering a compact luxury SUV may need to look at other premium options or upcoming electrified SUVs as the segment moves away from older internal-combustion platforms.
For now, the Discovery Sport is still being built and sold in many markets. Nepali customers planning to buy one should keep in mind that its lifecycle is officially ending in 2026, and future Land Rover focus is expected to shift toward safer, more advanced electrified SUVs.
