India’s electric scooter and bike market had another big month in August 2026, and the numbers matter directly for Nepal’s future EV choices.
India EV 2W sales: TVS and Bajaj dominate
- Total electric two‑wheeler retail sales in India reached 1,83,204 units in August 2026, up 67.05% from 1,09,673 units in August 2025. - Month-on-month, sales dipped 10.35% from 2,04,362 units in July 2026, showing that even a fast‑growing segment can cool slightly.
Among individual manufacturers: - **TVS stayed number one with 48,938 units in August 2026, almost double its 25,646 units a year earlier — a 90.82% jump. TVS held a 26.71% share of the EV two‑wheeler market, though its sales were down 11.82% from 55,499 units in July. - Bajaj was second with 41,114 units. Its year‑on‑year growth was the strongest among the top five, up 235.73% from just 12,246 units in August 2025. Bajaj’s share stood at 22.44%, with a 9.86% drop versus 45,613 units in July. - Together, TVS and Bajaj accounted for about 49.2%** of India’s electric two‑wheeler retail sales in August.
The rest of the top players: - **Ather took third place with 28,757 registrations, up 49.70% from 19,210 units a year earlier, but down 5.27% month‑on‑month from 30,357 units. - Hero MotoCorp was fourth with 19,007 units, up 38.04% year‑on‑year, but saw the steepest monthly fall among the top five, down 17% from 22,900 units. - Ola Electric ranked fifth at 13,852 units. It was the only manufacturer in the top eight with a year‑on‑year decline, dropping 28.83% from 19,464 units in August 2025. Its month‑on‑month dip was relatively mild at 1.80%. - Greaves Ampere sold 8,613 units, up 88.59% year‑on‑year but down 14.93% month‑on‑month. - River continued rapid expansion with 5,141 units, up 170.15% year‑on‑year. - BGauss followed with 4,845 units, up 180.22% year‑on‑year. River and BGauss fell 13.65% and 12.20% month‑on‑month respectively. - Other EV two‑wheeler manufacturers together added 12,937 units**.
Overall EV penetration in India’s two‑wheeler market reached 10.68% in August 2026, up from 7.66% a year earlier — a gain of 3.02 percentage points. Sequentially it slipped from 11.24% in July, with petrol/ethanol two‑wheelers rising from 88.67% to 89.23% share.
Why this matters for Nepal
Nepal imports most of its scooters and motorcycles from India, and several of these EV brands already have a footprint here:
- The Bajaj Chetak electric line is officially on sale in Nepal, with multiple variants available through the authorised Bajaj distributor. Recent launches like the Chetak C2501 and Chetak C3503 have been showcased at major Nepal EV events, with prices starting around Rs 2.81 lakh and going up to about Rs 3.39 lakh, while the earlier Chetak 3501 sits higher in the range.
- Ather has formally entered Nepal with the 450X and updated 450 series, operating multiple Experience Centres and service outlets via Vaidya Energy. The brand is also preparing to introduce newer variants such as the Rizta family scooter, which was first displayed at Nepal’s mobility expos.
These confirmed EV offerings mean Nepali buyers are already choosing between Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450 series in the mid‑to‑premium electric scooter segment. As TVS, Hero, Ola, Ampere, River and BGauss scale up in India, their rising volumes and wider parts supply chains improve the chances that more of their EV scooters could be brought to Nepal in the coming years, even though no distributor has announced firm Nepal launch plans for these brands yet.
For now, the strong August 2026 EV growth in India is mainly a signal for Nepal: it suggests that future imports of electric scooters are likely to become more competitive in features and potentially more stable in pricing, especially from brands that already sell here like Bajaj and Ather.
