Electric vehicles operate differently than petrol or diesel cars. Because the motor and drive wheels are often mechanically linked, towing an EV with its wheels on the ground can generate unwanted electricity. This process can damage the motor, inverter, and power electronics.
What to do during a breakdown
- Move to safety: Pull the vehicle to the side of the road or a secure parking area immediately.
- Assess the situation: Check for simple issues like a flat tire, a drained battery, or a 12-volt battery fault.
- Follow display warnings: If the dashboard shows a message, follow those instructions.
- Contact support: Call an authorized service center and inform them you have an electric vehicle so they send the correct equipment.
What to avoid
- Never use a tow rope: Dragging an EV with another vehicle can cause significant mechanical and electrical failure.
- Avoid touching high-voltage parts: Do not open orange cables or the battery pack.
- Do not charge if damaged: If you see smoke, smell something strange, or notice battery damage, do not plug the vehicle in or attempt to restart it.
Flatbed towing is the safest method to transport a disabled electric vehicle.
