A serious accident involving an Xpeng X9 in China has raised questions about the vehicle's safety systems. On October 15, an owner identified as Mr. Liu lost control of his electric MPV after hitting a curb. The vehicle subsequently struck a tree and a utility pole before overturning.
Although the front of the car was severely damaged and an insurance inspection deemed it a total loss, the airbags did not deploy. No injuries were reported in the incident.
In an official response, Xpeng stated that backend data and driving footage show the vehicle was in manual mode at the time of the collision. The company noted that the driver was pressing the accelerator and steering sharply before the impact. According to Xpeng, the force of the crash did not reach the specific threshold required to trigger the airbag sensors.
The manufacturer has agreed to cooperate with an independent third-party technical appraisal requested by the owner to determine the cause of the failure. The actual reason for the non-deployment remains unconfirmed pending this investigation.
