Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav has called for putting electric vehicles (EVs) in the national priority to reduce Nepal’s heavy spending on imported petrol and diesel.
Speaking at the inauguration of the **18th NADA Auto Show 2026 in Kathmandu, he said Nepal is rapidly increasing hydropower production and should use this clean domestic energy in transport to cut the trade deficit** and lower fuel dependence.
According to the Vice President, wider EV use can save household running costs, reduce air pollution and support a greener future for Nepali cities. He also highlighted that the automobile sector is a key source of government revenue and provides direct and indirect jobs, training and technical skills to many young people.
Yadav said shows like the NADA Auto Show help buyers compare new technologies, fuel efficiency, safety features and environmental impact before making a purchase. He urged the government and private sector to expand charging stations and other EV infrastructure, promote local production of auto parts and accessories, and create more respectable jobs for youth inside the country.
He also stressed that the benefits from the growth of the auto sector should reach all classes and communities, in line with Nepal’s inclusive democracy.
