US startup Pure Lithium has unveiled a lithium-metal battery it says could reduce EV makers’ dependence on Chinese battery materials.
The company claims its graphite-free LFP design can deliver higher energy density while also cutting weight and cost. It says the battery uses lithium metal instead of a graphite anode, and it does not need graphite, nickel, manganese or cobalt.
Pure Lithium says its battery has completed 9,315 charge-discharge cycles in laboratory testing. The company also says its first-generation pack has 300 Wh/kg energy density, while a second-generation version is targeted at 425 Wh/kg.
The startup is building a pilot production line in Chicago and is speaking with more than 40 companies about commercialization. The battery is not yet on the market, and the lab results still need to be proven at a larger scale before mass EV use.
