At the opening of the **18th NADA Auto Show 2026 in Kathmandu, NADA President Upendra Upreti** said vehicles should no longer be viewed only as luxury items.
He said the auto sector is linked to everyday mobility, business activity and jobs, and described it as a major source of employment and government revenue. He also called for a change in how vehicles are discussed in Nepal’s policy and public debate.
Upreti urged the government to improve Bhirkutimandap and move ahead with plans for an international-standard exhibition centre in Kathmandu. He said the current setup does not provide enough space for large vehicles such as trucks, buses and heavy equipment.
He also stressed the need for stable tax policy, saying frequent changes make long-term business planning difficult.
On electric vehicles, Upreti said rising EV use has created new opportunities, but Nepal should also focus on component production alongside assembly. He said local vehicle production needs additional support and incentives.
