Leapmotor A05s compact EV unveiled in China, hints at future affordable smart EVs for Nepal

Chinese electric vehicle maker Leapmotor has officially taken the wraps off the new A05s. It is a compact battery-electric hatchback positioned as an entry-level, high-tech model in its A-series lineup.

What is the Leapmotor A05s?

  • The body is around 4.2 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.56 metres tall. That puts it in the same footprint as popular compact hatchbacks and small sedans seen in Nepal.
  • The A05s uses front-wheel drive with two motor options: about 70 kW (around 95 PS) and 90 kW (around 122 PS).
  • Battery choices are 39.8 kWh and 53 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) packs, with Chinese CLTC-rated driving ranges of 405 km and 510 km respectively.
  • Selected variants are designed to carry a roof‑mounted LiDAR sensor. According to Chinese reports, this supports advanced driver-assistance functions such as enhanced obstacle detection and potentially city-level Navigate on Autopilot in the future.

In China, industry speculation points to a starting price band of 50,000–60,000 yuan. That converts to about Rs 10–12 lakh before taxes. Any future arrival in Nepal would cost much more once import duty, excise and VAT are added.

Nepal angle: Why the A05s matters here

Leapmotor is no longer an unknown name in Nepal. Local EV content creators have already started covering the Leapmotor C10 SUV as a model "launching soon" in the Nepali market, with attention on its long range and advanced ADAS features. That points to a distributor preparing the brand’s entry.

If Leapmotor formalises its presence with the C10, A-series models like the A05s become realistic candidates for future expansion of the line-up. For Nepali buyers, the A05s matters for three main reasons:

  • Affordable smart EV template: A compact hatchback with usable range above 300 km in real-world use and LiDAR-based ADAS could set a new benchmark in the Rs 25–35 lakh EV bracket if it ever comes here.
  • Pressure on existing rivals: Budget EVs in Nepal today, mostly from Chinese and Indian brands, usually rely on camera- and radar-only ADAS or none at all. If Leapmotor or similar Chinese brands start offering LiDAR on entry-level models, rivals may have to upgrade safety and driver-assistance tech without sharply increasing prices.
  • Battery tech and range expectations: LFP packs with over 400 km claimed range in a small car will raise buyer expectations on range and durability compared with some of the smaller Indian EVs currently imported.

What Nepali buyers should watch

Leapmotor is targeting rapid global growth, with aggressive delivery goals and a widening model range in China and Europe. As the brand’s Nepal plans firm up around the C10, local EV shoppers should watch for a few key signals:

  • Official confirmation of Leapmotor’s authorised distributor and pricing.
  • Whether the company chooses to introduce compact, lower-cost models like the A05s after the C10.
  • The level of ADAS and connectivity features offered here compared with Chinese and European specs.

The A05s has not been announced for Nepal yet. Its reveal hints at where future budget EVs in our market are headed. Expect more range, more intelligence and sharper competition in the compact EV segment that many urban Nepali buyers prefer.
