China’s Leapmotor is set to unveil its new A05 compact electric hatchback on 10 August in its home market, targeting young urban buyers with long range and a tech-heavy cabin. For now, the car is China-only, but its specs and expected price bracket matter for Nepal, which increasingly imports EVs from both China and India.
What Leapmotor A05 offers
- Size & segment: The A05 is a small family car, about 4.2 m long, similar in footprint to popular compact sedans and hatchbacks seen in Nepal. It’s classified as a sedan in China but is effectively a hatchback, which suits tight city roads and parking. The car measures 1800 mm in width and 1560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2605 mm.
- Battery & range: Two battery options — roughly 39.8 kWh (about 405 km CLTC) and 53 kWh (about 510 km CLTC). Chinese CLTC figures are optimistic; in real-world mixed driving, buyers can typically expect lower range, but these numbers still signal strong efficiency for a budget EV.
- Motor power: Variants with 70 kW and 90 kW motors, broadly comparable to many mainstream compact petrol cars in performance.
- Cabin tech: Standard Snapdragon 8295 cockpit chip, 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, and 14.6-inch central touchscreen, plus a 12-speaker audio system and karaoke features. LiDAR-based advanced driver assistance is offered as an option. The car also features 256-color ambient lighting and 33 storage spaces.
Why this matters for Nepal
- No confirmed Nepal launch yet: As of now, there is no official Nepali distributor for Leapmotor and no announcement of A05 imports. The brand has begun expanding abroad, including Indonesia, but South Asia is not yet on its public roadmap. However, Sangrila Motors is noted as a distributor for Leapmotor products in Nepal.
- Price expectations vs Nepal reality: In China, the A05 is positioned against cars like the BYD Dolphin and Geely Xingyuan, which typically start in the equivalent of roughly Rs 18–25 lakh before taxes. If a similar model were imported to Nepal, final prices would likely land upwards of Rs 30–40 lakh after customs duties, VAT and dealer margins, depending on battery size.
- Pressure on future EV pricing: The A05’s mix of long claimed range (up to 510 km) and high-end in-car tech at relatively low Chinese prices illustrates how rapidly compact EVs are improving. As more Chinese EVs compete in India and other Asian markets, Nepali buyers can expect:
- More range per rupee over the next few years.
- Better standard safety and infotainment features, even in entry-level EVs.
- Growing competition for existing small EVs sold in Nepal, which may gradually influence pricing and feature upgrades.
Nepal angle: what to watch
- If Leapmotor or a local dealer announces entry into Nepal, the A05 could become a rival to compact EVs from Chinese brands already here and any future sub-compact EVs from Indian makers.
- For now, the A05 is a signal of where budget EV technology is heading, rather than a direct purchase option for Nepali customers.
For Nepali EV buyers considering long-term ownership, the A05 shows that sub-compact EVs with 400+ km claimed range and large batteries around 40–50 kWh are becoming the new norm in China’s mass market — a trend likely to reach Nepal in the coming years, even if not via Leapmotor itself.
