Japanese automotive manufacturers are pursuing a multi-pathway strategy to lower emissions, focusing on a mix of technologies rather than relying solely on battery-powered electric vehicles. This approach was on display at the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2026, held in Chiba from October 13 to October 16, 2026.
Diverse technology showcase

Manufacturers presented various solutions to address carbon neutrality. Suzuki displayed its Victoris SUV, which is designed to run on compressed natural gas or compressed biomethane. Mitsubishi showcased its Outlander plug-in hybrid. Daihatsu introduced a development-stage engine that uses a mixture of ammonia and hydrogen. This technology aims to provide a viable alternative to traditional petrol engines by using ammonia as a hydrogen carrier.
Context in Nepal
While these technologies were highlighted in Japan, they are not currently part of the local market landscape. For context, Mitsubishi already offers several models in Nepal, including the Eclipse Cross and the Outlander; however, the Nepal prices for these specific models have not been announced. Suzuki also maintains a presence in Nepal with models such as the Grand Vitara and the E-Vitara, though official pricing remains unavailable in current sources.
Industry strategy

This Japanese strategy contrasts with the approach taken by many Chinese brands, which have focused heavily on battery-powered electric vehicles. While some analysts question whether Japan's multi-pathway strategy aligns with global market trends, Japanese companies continue to develop electric vehicles to remain competitive. For instance, the Toyota bZ3X electric SUV currently sells approximately 10,000 units per month in China, though it remains behind the sales volume of the Tesla Model Y.

Japanese automakers are balancing the development of electric vehicles with continued investment in alternative fuel technologies to meet diverse global needs.
