Tesla has hit a major production milestone, announcing it has built 10 million battery-electric vehicles worldwide. With that, it becomes the first automaker to cross the 1 crore EV production mark.
What Tesla has achieved
- Tesla says it has now produced 10 million fully electric cars since it started series production with the original Roadster more than 17 years ago.
- The company currently makes vehicles at four major plants – Fremont (USA), Shanghai (China), Berlin (Germany) and Texas (USA) – with a combined annual capacity of over 23 lakh vehicles, according to the announcement.
- Compact models have driven most of that growth. The Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV remain its highest-volume products and are among the world’s best-selling electric cars by cumulative sales.
Slower growth after record 2023
Tesla delivered around 18.1 lakh vehicles in 2023, its highest annual total so far. According to the company’s recent updates, deliveries in 2024 and 2025 have trended lower year-on-year as EV demand has cooled in some large markets and competition has increased.
Even with this slowdown, producing 1 crore EVs keeps Tesla well ahead of other dedicated electric-only brands in total volume and highlights its role in moving EVs into the mainstream.
What comes next for Tesla
Looking ahead, Tesla has indicated that:
- Its next big growth driver is planned to be a more affordable, next-generation electric car, expected to sit below the Model 3 in price.
- The company is putting significant resources into autonomous driving software, aiming to expand the capabilities of its so-called Full Self-Driving features.
- Tesla is also working on robotics and AI-focused projects, which it says will support its long-term business beyond cars.
However, Tesla has not yet started production of the lower-cost EV, and the company has not confirmed a launch date or final pricing for that model.
