India to Allow Retrofit Devices for Older Diesel Trucks, Buses
India is preparing to let older diesel trucks and buses run with retrofit emission-control devices fitted onto them. The plan targets pollution from ageing heavy vehicles still on the road.
IIT Delhi developed the devices. They are said to cut particulate matter emissions by up to 90% and nitrogen oxide emissions by around 60%.
Tests were carried out on BS-III, BS-IV and older diesel vehicles. After retrofitting, emissions came close to BS-VI levels, according to the results.
Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said similar technology already runs in diesel generator sets. Each retrofit device is expected to cost about Rs 4,000-5,000.
The government is also set to notify Automotive Industry Standard 228. This standard will lay down the technical and performance rules for the retrofit devices.
