FAW-Volkswagen has started blind pre-bookings in China for the ID. Aura T6, a new pure-electric mid-size SUV built on the brand’s latest CEA electronic architecture and fitted with advanced driver-assistance hardware including LiDAR.
While this model is currently confirmed only for the Chinese market, Nepal’s increasing reliance on China-made EVs means the ID. Aura T6 offers a useful preview of the kind of technology and size segment that could reach our market in the next few years through official imports or grey channels.
What is the ID. Aura T6?
- Mid-size electric SUV, 4.81m long, 2.84m wheelbase – noticeably larger than popular compact SUVs sold in Nepal.
- Clean design with a full-width LED light bar, illuminated VW logo and a practical 90L front trunk (frunk).
- Choice of 19- or 20-inch wheels and multiple exterior colours tailored to Chinese buyers.
Inside, the T6 focuses heavily on digital features:
- 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 15.6-inch central screen, 25.8-inch AR head-up display.
- Cabin electronics run on a 4nm smart-cockpit chip with an additional AI module for voice, navigation and apps.
- Supports full-car OTA updates, remote vehicle control, intelligent entry and popular phone mirroring standards.
- Comfort highlights include an 18-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, wireless phone charging, tray tables, panoramic sunroof and a highly adjustable front passenger "Queen’s" seat with massage, heating and ventilation.
Powertrain and driver-assistance
According to FAW-Volkswagen’s announcement, the ID. Aura T6 uses:
- A single electric motor rated at 170 kW (about 228 hp).
- A lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, known for long cycle life and stable performance.
The highlight for tech enthusiasts is the driver-assistance stack:
- LiDAR sensor combined with Horizon Robotics’ Journey 6H chip delivering 420 TOPS of computing power.
- Carizon (Volkswagen–Horizon joint venture) software enabling Highway Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) and Urban Pilot assistance, bringing it closer to what many global brands call Level 2+ or near-Level 3 assistance.
Possible Nepal angle: technology and pricing
Volkswagen does not yet retail the ID family officially in Nepal, and FAW-Volkswagen is a China-focused joint venture. However, Nepal’s EV scene already imports several Chinese brands with similar size and battery tech, and any future VW EV entry via China would likely be positioned in the same mid-size SUV bracket.
If the ID. Aura T6 or a similar VW EV came here with current Chinese ex-showroom pricing converted and taxes applied, it would plausibly land in the Rs 55–75 lakh bracket, competing with high-spec Chinese mid-size EV SUVs and undercutting larger European imports. For Nepali buyers, the key implications would be:
- Access to more sophisticated driver-assistance (LiDAR, NOA) than what is currently common in our EV market.
- A roomier mid-size EV alternative to today’s mainly compact offerings.
- Potential pressure on rival Chinese brands to add similar ADAS features at comparable prices.
For now, the ID. Aura T6 remains a China-only product, but its specs signal how fast mainstream EV SUVs are advancing. Nepali buyers considering long-term EV ownership can expect future imports — whether from Volkswagen or competing Chinese makers — to move toward larger batteries, stronger computing hardware and more advanced highway/urban assist functions in this price band.
