What is the Volkswagen ID. Unyx 09?
Volkswagen’s China joint venture, Volkswagen Anhui, has filed the ID. Unyx 09 for production, confirming a large all-electric fastback sedan co-developed with Chinese EV maker Xpeng. Regulatory documents in China describe it as a roughly 5.1-metre-long performance-oriented wide-body coupe with a wheelbase of about 3,030 mm, putting it in the same size bracket as executive sedans like the VW ID.7.
The car is built specifically for the Chinese market and is expected to go on sale there in the second half of 2026, according to Volkswagen Anhui’s own announcements and recent filings.
Powertrain, performance and battery
The ID. Unyx 09 will be offered in two electric powertrain configurations:
- Single-motor rear-wheel drive: peak output around 230 kW (about 308 hp).
- Dual-motor all-wheel drive: combined peak output of 370 kW (about 496 hp).
Both variants use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by CATL, with packs assembled by Volkswagen Anhui Components. LFP chemistry is known for long cycle life and better thermal stability, though usually with slightly lower energy density than nickel-based packs.
Regulatory data from China indicate a top speed of around 200 km/h for both variants, with curb weight crossing 2.2 tonnes. The car rides on up to 21-inch tyres and features Brembo-branded braking hardware, underlining its performance positioning.
Tech and features
Chinese filings and VW’s China presentations highlight advanced lighting and driver-assistance tech:
- High-definition matrix LED headlights with road projections (lane guides, width markers).
- AI-heavy intelligent driving, expected to include at least Level 2 navigation-on-autopilot features.
- A highly digital cockpit, developed with Xpeng’s software expertise.
These systems are part of VW’s strategy to regain tech leadership in China’s competitive EV market.
Nepal angle: will the ID. Unyx 09 come here?
At present, Volkswagen’s official Nepal lineup focuses on internal-combustion models imported mostly from India, such as the Taigun and Virtus. There is no indication that the China-only ID. Unyx sub-brand or the ID. Unyx 09 sedan is planned for right-hand-drive markets or for exports beyond China.
For Nepali buyers, this specific model is unlikely to be launched, and even if it did, pricing would be far beyond mass-market levels. Using China prices of similar ID. Unyx models as a rough guide (ID. Unyx 08 SUV starts around 33,300 USD), a performance sedan like the 09 could easily exceed Rs 70–80 lakh after Nepal’s EV duties and dealership margins, keeping it in ultra-niche territory.
However, the technology matters for Nepal:
- VW’s work with Xpeng on software, AI driving assistance and digital cockpits may trickle into future global VW EVs.
- The use of CATL LFP batteries could influence the battery choices in more affordable Chinese EVs that do reach Nepal, improving durability and safety.
So while the ID. Unyx 09 itself is effectively a showcase for China, Nepali buyers should watch it as an early preview of features and battery tech that might appear in more attainable EVs from China and Volkswagen in the coming years.
