Volkswagen’s China-focused Jetta sub-brand has taken the wraps off its first pure electric sedan, the Jetta M6, through regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. According to these filings, the M6 is an all-new compact–mid-size fastback EV aimed squarely at budget-conscious buyers in China.
What is the Jetta M6?
The Jetta M6 is a front-wheel-drive electric sedan with a fastback profile and a wheelbase of 2,820 mm, putting it in roughly the same size class as popular compact sedans sold in South Asia. The car measures 4,806 mm in length and 1,500 mm in height, with width depending on variant.
It uses a single permanent-magnet motor from Hunan CRRC Times Electric on the front axle, with two planned power levels:
- Standard motor: about 113 kW peak power, top speed 166 km/h
- Higher-output motor: about 145 kW peak power, top speed 172 km/h
Lithium-ion NMC battery packs are supplied by CALB, with pack assembly handled by the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture. Depending on the configuration, kerb weight ranges between about 1,557 and 1,628 kg.
Wheel options include 17-inch and 18-inch alloys with 215-section tyres. Optional features mentioned in filings include a panoramic sunroof, shark-fin antenna, tyre-pressure monitoring and side-fender cameras. Detailed range and safety features have not yet been officially published.
Price and launch timeline
Chinese media reports say Jetta is targeting an entry price around 102,000 yuan for the M6, roughly Rs 19–20 lakh at current exchange rates. This would place it in China’s lower mid-range EV segment, below Volkswagen’s global ID-series models.
The brand has outlined a roadmap to launch several new energy vehicles over the next few years, with the M6 scheduled to go on sale in the Chinese market in the second half of 2026, according to these reports.
Nepal angle: will the Jetta M6 come here?
Jetta is a China-only sub-brand created for FAW-Volkswagen, and its current petrol crossovers and sedans are not officially exported to Nepal. There is no announcement from Volkswagen or any Nepali distributor indicating that the Jetta M6 will be offered here.
However, the M6 still matters for Nepali buyers in several ways:
- It shows how quickly Chinese manufacturers are pushing affordable electric sedans with decent performance.
- A target starting price around Rs 20 lakh in China suggests that, even after duties and logistics, similarly positioned Chinese EV sedans could pressure prices in Nepal if importers choose to bring them.
- The use of local Chinese batteries and motors highlights how Chinese supply chains are lowering EV costs, which ultimately affects the price and specification of China-made EVs that do reach Nepal.
For now, the Jetta M6 should be seen as a reference point rather than an imminent launch for Nepal: an example of the kind of budget-friendly electric sedan that could influence future offerings and pricing in our market, especially as Nepali importers increasingly look to China for EVs.
