Essential safety tips for Dashain motorcycle travel in Nepal

Dashain travel often involves long-distance rides on motorcycles and scooters. While these trips offer freedom, Nepal's highways present unique challenges during the festival season. Riders must prioritize preparation to avoid accidents.

Bike Preparation

Schedule a full service with a qualified mechanic at least three days before your departure. Focus on these critical areas:

  • Braking System: Inspect brake pads and fluid levels, as these are vital for navigating steep descents and sharp mountain curves.
  • Tires: Check for tread wear and maintain correct air pressure to prevent punctures.
  • Visibility: Ensure headlights, brake lights, and indicators are fully functional for night riding or foggy conditions.
  • Engine and Chain: Change the engine oil to handle long-distance heat and ensure the chain is properly lubricated and tensioned.

Safety and Load Management

Never ride without proper protective gear. Both the rider and pillion must wear high-quality, fastened helmets. Use windproof jackets, full-length pants, gloves, and sturdy footwear to protect against cold and potential falls.

Distribute luggage evenly on both sides of the bike to maintain balance. Secure all items tightly with bungee cords, as loose cargo can cause instability. Avoid overloading beyond the manufacturer's capacity.

On the Road

Maintain a controlled speed, especially near settlements, narrow bridges, and blind turns. Avoid aggressive overtaking; only pass when the road ahead is clear and you have signaled your intent. Take a break every two hours to stretch and stay alert.

Carry your driving license, updated bluebook, and third-party insurance documents. Keep your mobile phone charged and carry a power bank along with a basic first-aid kit. Most importantly, never ride under the influence of alcohol or when fatigued. A safe arrival is more important than reaching your destination quickly.
