Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has confirmed it will unveil its first humanoid robot in August at its "Di Space" science and experience centres in China. The robot will be shown as an interactive prototype rather than a concept on paper, and it is part of a new business division focused on embodied artificial intelligence.
What BYD is planning
- BYD has set up a dedicated team under its 15th Business Division to develop humanoid robots and other embodied AI products.
- Executive vice president Stella Li has said BYD aims to build an *open platform* for robots, producing both in-house products and devices co-developed with partners.
- The company’s plan is that each BYD store could eventually have two or three robots acting as sales advisors, introducing and demonstrating vehicles to customers.
- BYD sees its strength in large-scale manufacturing, electronics and software as directly transferable from car-making to robotics.
The upcoming August unveiling at Di Space is expected to be the first public showing of a working humanoid robot, designed for interactive use with visitors rather than industrial tasks.
Nepal angle: more than cars
BYD already sells electric cars in several Asian markets, and Nepal imports most of its vehicles from China and India. Any future expansion of BYD’s retail network into Nepal would likely follow the company’s global showroom standards.

Other Chinese automakers, including Chery-linked brands and SAIC-GM, have begun using or selling humanoid robots. This suggests future car showrooms in the region may increasingly blend EVs, AI and robotics.
For Nepali consumers and dealers, this trend signals that:
- Technology used to build cars (sensors, batteries, AI control systems) is spreading into new areas like robots.
- As Nepal’s EV imports from China grow, local distributors may need to prepare for new kinds of customer experiences, training and aftersales tools.
