China’s latest export figures show how quickly its electric vehicle makers are expanding overseas – and Nepal is already feeling the impact.
BYD leads global EV push – and Nepal
China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data for June shows BYD as the largest exporter of new energy vehicles (NEVs), shipping 170,897 units and holding about a third of China’s NEV exports.
BYD is already one of Nepal’s most visible EV brands, with models like the Dolphin, Atto 3 and newer SUVs officially listed on BYD Nepal’s site and local EV price trackers. - BYD Dolphin is currently around Rs 41 lakh in Nepal, while the Atto 3 is listed above Rs 67 lakh, according to local EV pricing portals.
Stronger export momentum suggests BYD will keep pushing more models to overseas markets with aggressive pricing. For Nepali buyers, that likely means: - steady flow of new BYD models and variants - continued pressure on rivals to lower prices or improve features - more competition in the Rs 35–70 lakh EV bracket, where BYD is already active
Chery and Geely rise – new choices for Nepali EV buyers
Chery ranked second in China’s June NEV exports with about 74,000 units, while Geely came third with over 61,000 units. Both brands now have a footprint in Nepal: - Chery’s electric iCar V23 has already debuted in Nepal, with local reviewers highlighting its retro design and urban-friendly EV package. - Geely’s EX5 Pro and other EVs are listed on Nepali auto portals, typically priced around Rs 60 lakh range.
As these brands expand exports, Nepali distributors can access a larger pool of right-hand-drive and export-focused EV models. That could translate into: - more model options from Chery and Geely in the compact SUV and crossover segments - incremental price competition with established players such as BYD, MG, Hyundai and Tata
Tesla, GWM, Leapmotor: indirect but important for Nepal
Tesla China ranked fourth in NEV exports. Tesla is not officially sold in Nepal yet, but its growing export role matters indirectly: - if Tesla expands in nearby markets (India, Southeast Asia), it raises overall EV expectations on tech and safety, nudging Chinese brands in Nepal to upgrade.
Great Wall Motor (GWM) and Leapmotor also feature in China’s top 10 exporters. GWM already sells the ORA 5 EV in Nepal, introduced with a focus on design and range. Leapmotor has no formal presence yet, but its rising export volumes make future entry into small markets like Nepal more plausible.
What Nepali buyers should watch
For Nepal, China’s export surge is not just a foreign statistic – it shapes showroom line-ups and price tags: - brands with strong export growth (BYD, Chery, Geely, GWM) are the same ones filling EV halls at Nepali auto shows - higher export scale can lower per-unit costs, helping Nepali distributors negotiate better prices - as more Chinese EVs arrive, buyers gain choice, but must pay attention to after-sales support, battery warranty and spare parts availability
In short, June’s export rankings confirm that the EVs driving China’s global push are the same names steadily transforming Nepal’s urban roads and mid-range car market.
