Toyota appears to be getting closer to launching its first electric Land Cruiser, after a heavily camouflaged prototype was photographed undergoing development testing in Japan.
First clear sign of an electric Land Cruiser
A test vehicle was recently spotted at Toyota’s Tahara manufacturing facility in Japan, parked next to the current Land Cruiser GR Sport during what looks like routine development work. The image was shared by Toyota Europe’s marketing and product strategy director, Andrea Carlucci, with the caption "The Legend evolves," hinting strongly at an electric future for the iconic SUV.
Tahara is a key plant for Toyota’s ladder-frame SUVs, building the Land Cruiser 250 Series, Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runner, which adds weight to the idea that this prototype is related to the next-generation Land Cruiser family.
Design: closer to the Land Cruiser Se concept
Even under thick camouflage, the prototype’s front end and headlamp shape look similar to the Land Cruiser Se concept shown in 2023. The test car also seems to sit a bit lower than the current Land Cruiser 300, suggesting a more road‑oriented stance rather than an extreme off‑road focus.
Toyota has not confirmed dimensions, but the earlier Land Cruiser Se concept was 5,150 mm long with a 3,050 mm wheelbase, slightly longer than today’s Land Cruiser 300. Whether the production car keeps these measurements is still unknown.
Platform: shift from ladder frame to unibody
Unlike traditional Land Cruisers that use a ladder‑frame chassis, the upcoming electric model is expected to move to a unibody (monocoque) structure. This layout should improve on‑road comfort, ride quality and handling, which will appeal to buyers who mostly drive on highways and city roads. However, it may not match the extreme off‑road durability of classic Land Cruiser versions such as the 70, 250 and 300 Series.
Industry reports suggest the SUV will be built on Toyota’s e‑TNGA electric platform, or an updated version of it, which already underpins several of the company’s EVs.
Powertrain: full electric, range‑extender under study
Toyota has not disclosed official powertrain figures yet. According to international reports, the vehicle is expected to use a battery‑electric system, and a range‑extender variant (an engine used only to charge the battery) is also being evaluated.
A visible front cooling intake on the prototype has led to speculation that this test car could be related to such a range‑extender setup, but this has not been confirmed by Toyota.
What this means for Nepali buyers
For now, there is no announced launch date and no official global price for the electric Land Cruiser. Toyota also has not revealed battery capacity, driving range or motor output.
However, the appearance of a near‑production prototype at a major manufacturing site indicates that development is well advanced and moving towards production. If Toyota brings this model to right‑hand‑drive markets, it could eventually reach Nepal through official Land Cruiser import channels, offering buyers a large, premium electric SUV with Land Cruiser branding and more comfortable road manners than traditional off‑road‑focused models.
Until Toyota issues a formal announcement, all details on launch timing, range and pricing remain unconfirmed and should be treated as early indications rather than final specifications.
