Nepal’s young road users have been brought into the safety conversation through a new art and quiz competition on road safety held at Shree Naulin Secondary School, Chunikhhel, Budhanilkantha.
Under the Safe Steps, Bright Future campaign, Nepal Automobiles Association (NASA Nepal) and Budhanilkantha Municipality gathered 60 students from 15 community schools — 10 secondary and 5 basic level institutions.
In the road safety art contest, Alisa Rai of Shree Naulin Secondary School took first place, with Jyoti Rana Magar and Kiran BK from Shree Balkumari Secondary School taking second and third. Thirty students, two from each school, were judged on relevance to road safety, creativity, originality, technical skill and overall impact.
The quiz competition brought 30 students from 10 secondary schools. After group rounds and a tight final decided by tiebreaker, the team of Prashant Singh Thakuri, Rajan Malla and Eliza Shahi from Shree Ganesh Secondary School finished first, ahead of Shree Naulin Secondary School in second and Shree Budhanilkantha Secondary School in third.
Quiz winners received Rs 9,000, Rs 6,000 and Rs 3,000 for first, second and third place, while art winners earned Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000. All participants were given certificates.
Budhanilkantha Mayor Mitharam Adhikari and NASA Nepal Executive Director Govinda Bhattarai handed over the prizes and also joined road safety trainer and former DSP Bipin Gautam in a short orientation on basic traffic safety for the students. Art expert Sagar Manandhar highlighted how drawings can carry strong social messages, encouraging students to use their skills for awareness.
Under Safe Steps, Bright Future, NASA Nepal has already trained 15 teachers in road safety inside the municipality and, through them, reached more than 1,100 students with structured safety lessons. The campaign now plans to pilot a dedicated road safety curriculum in Budhanilkantha’s schools so that traffic awareness becomes a regular part of classroom learning for future riders and drivers.
