Pedestrian held for assaulting on-duty woman traffic police in New Baneshwor

A 27-year-old pedestrian has been taken into custody in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu for allegedly assaulting an on-duty woman traffic police constable on Tuesday morning.

Police said the incident occurred when the pedestrian, identified as Raj Kathayat, originally from Tatopani Rural Municipality-2 in Jumla and currently living in Baneshwor-10, tried to cross the busy road at ground level instead of using the overhead sky bridge.

  • The woman traffic officer reportedly asked him to use the sky bridge for his own safety and to maintain traffic discipline.
  • A brief verbal dispute followed, during which the man allegedly laid hands on the officer, amounting to physical assault.

Officers on the scene immediately brought Kathayat under control and initiated legal proceedings for assaulting a police officer on duty. Authorities have again reminded road users that ignoring sky bridges and traffic rules can lead to accidents as well as legal action.

For vehicle owners and daily commuters in Kathmandu, this case underlines how enforcement around pedestrian crossings and overhead bridges is being tightened on major city roads.
