Skills gap in Nepal's auto sector
Nepal's auto industry is bringing in vehicles loaded with AI, sensors, software updates, automation, and digital systems. Colleges are still stuck teaching older IT subjects, according to Dr. Suman Thapaliya of Texas College of Management and IT.
He said education institutions must update curriculum, teaching methods, and practical training so students can handle the next phase of mobility.
What he wants taught
Thapaliya said future-ready training should include artificial intelligence, cyber security, embedded systems, robotics, edge computing, automotive software, and digital forensics. Students also need direct exposure to modern vehicle features such as large screens, warning systems, and software-driven controls, he said.
EV research and local roads
Nepal still needs more research on EV range, charging access, battery use, and road conditions, he argued. This matters especially for local driving needs and public transport.
A vehicle built for a rich country may not suit Nepal's roads and usage patterns. Local research matters more than copying global models, he said.
Industry and colleges must work together
Thapaliya called for stronger cooperation between automobile companies and academic institutions so research funding and manpower development can move together.
If colleges do not adapt in time, he warned, Nepali students could fall behind, as auto technology is changing fast.
