India’s passenger vehicle industry had a strong July 2026, with dispatches of cars, SUVs and vans estimated at around 4.66 lakh units, up about 33% from roughly 3.5 lakh units a year earlier, according to company data and dealer estimates.

For Nepali buyers, who mostly import vehicles from India, this higher production and wholesale volume translates into better model availability, shorter waiting periods and more options in key segments like small cars, SUVs and factory-fitted CNG models.

Market leaders and segment trends

Maruti Suzuki stayed on top of India’s passenger vehicle market in July, with about 1,96,000 dispatches to its domestic network. Tata Motors followed with around 62,600 units, while Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India dispatched about 60,000 and 54,000 units respectively, according to the companies.

Entry-level hatchbacks recorded over 60% year-on-year growth, indicating that budget-focused buyers are returning to showrooms. Compact and midsize SUVs remained the main growth driver, with SUV dispatches up by nearly 50% compared to July last year.

These trends are closely watched in Nepal, where popular imports like compact hatchbacks and sub-4m SUVs track Indian buyer preferences. Strong demand in India tends to push manufacturers to increase output, which improves supply for export markets including Nepal.

CNG models gain despite costlier fuel

Even with fuel prices high in both India and Nepal, Indian manufacturers reported rising interest in CNG-powered vehicles. Maruti Suzuki said its expanding CNG portfolio helped soften the impact of petrol and diesel price rises, and the company achieved its highest-ever monthly CNG sales, at nearly 83,000 units in July, according to its announcement.

For Nepal, where CNG infrastructure is still limited and concentrated in specific corridors, this signals how Indian manufacturers are likely to shape future low-running-cost options. As more CNG models are developed for India, some of them may eventually be adapted or offered in markets like Nepal if refuelling networks grow.

Capacity ramp-up and impact on Nepal

Including light commercial vehicles and supplies to other automakers, Maruti Suzuki’s total domestic wholesales crossed 2,11,000 units in July, and it became the first Indian carmaker to pass the 2 lakh units monthly wholesale mark in its home market.

The company has indicated that newly commissioned manufacturing lines will be ramped up further in the coming months, particularly for SUVs and CNG models. According to its statement, this will improve vehicle availability across its network.

For Nepali buyers, this broader production push in India matters in several ways:

  • More consistent supply of high-demand models, reducing long waiting lists that have affected popular hatchbacks and compact SUVs.
  • Better chances of timely facelifts and new model introductions in Nepal, as Indian plants scale up and stabilize output.
  • Potential for more fuel-efficient and alternative-fuel options (including CNG and hybrid) to be considered for export, depending on local policies and infrastructure.

While exact import plans vary by brand and distributor, the current momentum in India’s passenger vehicle industry suggests a period of strong model availability and broader choice for Nepali car and SUV buyers over the coming year.
