Global carmakers are lining up a fresh batch of off-road SUVs for India, and these products are likely to catch the eye of Nepali buyers over the next few years. Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota each have a new adventure-focused model under development, aimed at buyers who want a vehicle that can cope with rough roads and outdoor trips.
Why it matters for Nepal
Nepal’s road network ranges from steep mountain routes to rough rural tracks and mixed urban conditions. Vehicles with high ground clearance, strong suspension and 4x4 or AWD systems remain popular among private buyers and tourism operators.
Many SUVs launched in India later arrive in Nepal through official distributors. Once these upcoming models enter regular production, they could also join the local lineup.
Mahindra: Updated three-door Thar
Mahindra is preparing a facelift of the three-door Thar, a lifestyle SUV already sold in Nepal. Indian media reports say the new version will pick up design cues from the larger Thar Roxx. Expected updates include:

Hyundai is working on a new off-road-oriented SUV for the Indian market. The company has not disclosed full details yet, but industry sources suggest:
- It will use a monocoque platform (similar to most modern crossovers)
- It is expected to offer petrol and petrol-hybrid powertrains
- The hybrid variant may feature electric all-wheel drive (e-AWD), using an electric motor to power the rear axle
Market reports indicate this model is being targeted for around 2028 in India, though Hyundai has not confirmed an exact launch date. Hyundai’s SUVs such as Creta and Venue already sell well in Nepal. That track record increases the likelihood that this new off-road-focused model could be introduced here after its Indian debut.
Toyota: Compact Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota is reportedly preparing the Land Cruiser FJ, a compact body-on-frame SUV positioned below the Fortuner. According to international reporting:
- Expected engine: 2.7-litre petrol, around 164 hp and 245 Nm of torque
- Likely gearbox: 6-speed automatic
- Expected drivetrain: part-time four-wheel drive
Preliminary size indications place it at about 4,610 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,890 mm high, with a 2,580 mm wheelbase and five-seat layout. Indian media expect an introduction there toward the end of 2028, but Toyota has not yet announced final India or Nepal plans.
What Nepali buyers should expect
Demand for adventure travel, camping and off-road tourism in Nepal is rising, helped by better road connections to hill and mountain destinations. As more people head out on rough routes, interest in lifestyle SUVs that combine everyday usability with genuine off-road ability is also growing.
If Mahindra’s updated Thar, Hyundai’s new off-road SUV and Toyota’s Land Cruiser FJ reach Nepal after their India launches, Nepali buyers could get more choice in:
