China’s Chery backs Korea’s KG Mobility, eyeing global SUV push

Chinese automaker Chery has announced a $75 million strategic investment in South Korea’s KG Mobility (KGM), the company that took over SsangYong. According to the announcement, Chery will buy convertible bonds that could translate into about a 10% stake in KGM, and the two firms plan to share global production capacity, sales channels and technology.

What this Chinese–Korean deal means

• The investment is tied to a broader plan to co-develop SUVs and electrified models and to use each other’s factories and supply chains in overseas markets.
• The first joint product will be a mid-size SUV (code SE-10) based on Chery’s T2X platform, planned as the successor to the KGM Rexton.
• According to KGM, the SUV is targeted for early 2027 with 2.0‑litre petrol and plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) variants.
• Beyond vehicles, Chery and KGM will form task forces to explore cooperation in automotive semiconductors, robotics, raw materials and steel.

Chery is already one of China’s most aggressive exporters, shipping about 1.34 million vehicles overseas last year and remaining China’s number one passenger car exporter for over two decades, according to company data.

Nepal angle: potential new SUV options, but no confirmation yet

Chery does not have an official passenger‑car distributor in Nepal at present, and KG Mobility (formerly SsangYong) also has no active, large‑scale presence in the current Nepali market. Past SsangYong models arrived only in limited numbers, and there has been no recent launch activity from either brand in Nepal.

However, the partnership is relevant for Nepali buyers for several reasons:

• As Chery and KGM develop global‑spec SUVs and PHEVs, these models are likely to be positioned for emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe — the same export corridors through which many China‑ and Korea‑built vehicles reach South Asia.
• If a Nepali importer ties up with Chery or KGM in the next few years, the SE‑10 successor to Rexton and future PHEV SUVs could become candidates for our market as premium alternatives to current Korean and Chinese SUVs.
• The plan to share factories and supply chains could help these brands keep production costs lower, which may translate into more competitive pricing if and when they enter Nepal.

For now, any impact on SUV prices in Nepal is indirect. Strong Chinese export growth and new alliances like Chery–KGM increase competition in the wider region. That can pressure existing Korean and Chinese brands already present here to hold prices in the Rs 50–80 lakh SUV band more tightly, especially for larger seven‑seater and electrified models.
