BYD Sealion 08 flagship electric SUV shown in China: could this big EV come to Nepal?

What is the BYD Sealion 08?

Chinese EV maker BYD has revealed the cabin of its new Sealion 08 full-size SUV in China, positioned as the flagship of its Ocean series. According to the company’s China launch information, the Sealion 08 is a 5.1-metre SUV with five- or six-seat layouts, air suspension and advanced driver-assistance features.

BYD already sells models like the Atto 3 and e6 in Nepal, so this new SUV hints at the kind of premium, tech-heavy vehicles Nepali buyers could see from Chinese brands in the coming years.

Key specs: big batteries, long range

According to BYD’s Chinese-market announcement:

• Dimensions: 5,115 mm length, 1,999 mm width, 1,800 mm height, 3,030 mm wheelbase. That makes it significantly larger than typical mid-size SUVs seen in Nepal.
• Battery options (BEV): 92 kWh and 115 kWh LFP packs, with a claimed CLTC range between 710–900 km.
• Power (BEV):
• RWD single motor: 320 kW (~429 hp)
• Long-range RWD: 370 kW (~496 hp)
• AWD dual motor: 585 kW (~784 hp)
• Plug-in hybrid (DM-i): 1.5-litre petrol engine with 115 kW (~154 hp) plus a 200 kW (~268 hp) electric motor, with a claimed up to 400 km CLTC.
• BYD has also indicated a DM-p performance version with 400 kW (~536 hp) combined output.

For Nepali context, even the entry BEV version offers roughly double the battery capacity of most current electric SUVs sold here. The plug-in hybrid variant targets range anxiety on longer highway routes.

Interior: six-seat luxury focus

The Sealion 08’s cabin is aimed at family and chauffeur-driven use.

• Six-seat layout with two captain seats in the second row, equipped with power leg rests, heating and ventilation, and a zero-gravity mode for the right seat.
• Ceiling-mounted entertainment screen, folding table for rear passengers, and extensive ambient lighting.
• Streaming rear-view mirror, suede roof lining and leather upholstery, plus multiple USB Type-A and Type-C charging points.

These features put the SUV in a more premium bracket than BYD’s current Nepal range, closer to luxury-brand offerings that are still rare in the electric segment here.

What it could mean for Nepal

BYD has not announced the Sealion 08 for export to South Asia, and there is no official confirmation for Nepal yet. However, given that:

• BYD already operates through official distributors in Nepal,
• Nepal’s EV market is increasingly dependent on Chinese imports for larger SUVs, and
• bigger battery packs and plug-in hybrids are attractive for Kathmandu–Terai and East–West Highway usage,

the Sealion 08 – or a related large BYD SUV – is a realistic candidate for future introduction if demand for premium electric SUVs keeps rising.

If it does arrive, pricing would likely be high. Based on typical Chinese-to-Nepal price conversions for similarly sized imported EVs, a model like the Sealion 08 could reasonably sit well above Rs 70–80 lakh, and potentially in Rs 1 crore-plus territory once customs, excise and dealer margins are added. That would put it up against premium ICE and hybrid SUVs rather than mainstream EVs.

Nepal angle: expectations for buyers

For Nepali buyers, the key implications if BYD or similar Chinese brands bring such a model are:

• Much longer real-world range than current mainstream EVs, making intercity travel easier.
• More comfortable three-row seating for large families and travel businesses.
• Advanced ADAS features (such as Navigate on Autopilot-like functions) that could gradually introduce higher levels of driver assistance to Nepal’s roads, subject to local regulations and map support.

Until there is an official launch plan, the Sealion 08 mainly serves as a signal from China’s EV industry. Chinese manufacturers are pushing into large, high-tech electric SUVs, and Nepal’s future premium EV imports are likely to move in the same direction, with more focus on range, comfort and semi-autonomous driving tech.
