Chinese EV maker BYD has crossed a major manufacturing milestone, announcing its 1.7 crore‑th new energy vehicle (NEV) worldwide. According to the company, the landmark vehicle is the newly launched Seal 08, a mid‑to‑large premium sedan built with BYD’s latest battery and fast‑charging technology.
What is the Seal 08 and why does it matter for Nepal?
The Seal 08 has just gone on sale in China with plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) and pure electric (BEV) variants, and BYD is using it to push further into the premium EV segment. The BEV version sits on an 800‑volt high‑voltage platform and is claimed to deliver a pure‑electric range of around 900 km on Chinese test cycles, with ultra‑fast charging that can add several hundred kilometres of range in minutes, according to the company’s announcement.
For Nepali buyers, the closest match is the BYD Sealion 08, already teased as “coming soon to Nepal” by EV‑focused outlets. That model lists similar core specs: up to 900 km claimed range, an 82.5 kWh second‑generation Blade Battery, 320 kW motor output, and a 240 km/h top speed, with six‑seat and premium suspension options.
A final Nepal price is yet to be officially declared. Based on current BYD pricing, the Sealion 08 is expected to sit well above the existing Seal and rival premium EVs. At today’s exchange rate, the Chinese starting price of roughly Rs 32–33 lakh comes to several times that figure once customs duties, excise, and VAT are added for a large imported sedan.
Where BYD stands in Nepal today
BYD already has a strong foothold in Nepal through its distributor Cimex Inc. Pvt. Ltd. The BYD Seal sedan is on sale in three variants:
- Seal Dynamic: around Rs 1.10 crore
- Seal Premium: around Rs 1.45 crore
- Seal Performance: around Rs 1.95 crore
These sit alongside the Atto 3 and Dolphin, and newer crossovers such as the Sealion 7. This gives BYD one of the widest pure‑EV line‑ups in the country.
As BYD’s global production passes 1.7 crore NEVs, its scale has a direct bearing on Nepal’s market. Larger volumes and second‑generation Blade Batteries can, over time, help stabilize supply and potentially ease prices for future imports, even if high local taxes keep sticker prices elevated.
What Nepali buyers should watch next
- The formal launch and price announcement of the Sealion 08 in Nepal.
- Whether BYD brings both PHEV and full‑EV versions, which would directly affect running costs and tax slabs.
- How fast‑charging support and 800V hardware are matched to Nepal’s still‑developing charging network.
For now, BYD’s latest milestone shows that the brand behind some of Nepal’s most popular premium EVs is continuing to scale up quickly, shaping the options and technology Nepali buyers will see in showrooms over the next few years.
