Chinese EV giant BYD has crossed another big production mark, rolling out its 17 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV). According to the company, that milestone car is the newly launched Seal 08 flagship sedan, a mid-to-large premium model positioned above the existing Seal.
Seal 08: BYD’s new flagship sedan
The Seal 08 was officially launched in China in early July as a high-end sedan offered in both pure electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. The Chinese starting price is reported at around 196,900 yuan, roughly Rs 39–40 lakh before taxes and local costs.
Key technical highlights (as per BYD’s announcement and Chinese media reports): - Second-generation Blade Battery with flash-charging capability - Up to around 900 km claimed range on the pure electric variant - 800V high-voltage platform on BEV versions for ultra-fast charging - Around five minutes of fast charge to add several hundred kilometres of range (claimed) - Standard LiDAR-based advanced driver assistance, including urban navigation assist and automatic emergency braking
These figures are based on Chinese test cycles and BYD’s own data. Real-world range and performance can vary and would need local validation if the car comes to Nepal.
Nepal angle: will Seal 08 come here?
BYD is already deeply present in Nepal through Cimex Inc. as the authorised distributor. The company sells the BYD Seal, Atto 3, Dolphin and newer models like the Sealion 7 and Seagull under different nameplates, giving the brand a growing premium EV line-up in the country.
Local EV portals already list the closely related BYD Sealion 08 as “coming soon” to Nepal, with specs that match the Chinese Seal 08: around 900 km claimed range, 82.5 kWh battery, 800V architecture and second-generation Blade Battery. While no official Nepali price is announced, a large premium EV of this class would realistically sit well above the current Seal, likely in the Rs 1.8–2.5 crore bracket depending on variant, taxes and dealer margin.
If BYD does bring the Seal 08/Sealion 08 here, it would: - Push Nepal’s EV market further into the luxury sedan segment, where options are currently limited - Offer long-range fast-charging capability suited to intercity routes like Kathmandu–Pokhara or East–West Highway travel for wealthier buyers - Put competitive pressure on other premium EVs and imported plug-in hybrids from China and India, potentially influencing pricing of future models
For most Nepali buyers, the Seal 08 will be a halo product rather than a mass-market choice. But BYD’s ability to produce 17 million NEVs and roll out advanced technologies quickly suggests that features like flash charging and high-voltage platforms could filter down into more affordable models that matter for mainstream Nepali EV customers.
As of now, there is no officially confirmed launch date or price for the Seal 08 in Nepal. Given BYD’s growing portfolio here and its regional export push, the model – or its Sealion 08 derivative – remains a realistic future addition to the Nepali premium EV market.
