Denza Z: BYD’s new electric hypercar goes global

Chinese EV maker BYD has started pre‑sales of its new electric supercar, the Denza Z, in China and has also confirmed prices for the UK market. The car comes from BYD’s premium sub‑brand Denza and was recently shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.

According to Denza’s announcement and international reports, pre‑sale pricing in China starts at about 6,80,000 yuan, or roughly Rs 1.34 crore. In the UK, the entry Coupe variant starts at £142,900, which converts to around Rs 2.46 crore.

That means the same car is priced more than Rs 1 crore higher in the UK than in China, mainly because of shipping costs, insurance, local taxes and import duties in foreign markets.

Three variants, all with extreme performance

Denza will offer the Z in three main versions:

  • Coupe (hardtop)
  • Spider (soft‑top convertible)
  • Racing (track‑focused version)

In the UK, reports put the Spider at £159,900 (around Rs 2.75 crore) and the Racing variant at £172,900 (around Rs 2.98 crore).

All versions use a tri‑motor electric powertrain: one motor on the front axle and two separate motors on the rear. The combined output is reported at around 1,582 hp, putting the Denza Z squarely in hypercar territory.

According to Denza, the Racing version can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in about 1.96 seconds, with a claimed top speed of 350 km/h. The Coupe and Spider are slightly slower but still reach 100 km/h in just over 2 seconds. Their top speed is limited to 300 km/h.

Battery, charging and technology

The Denza Z uses BYD’s latest 76 kWh Blade Battery, a lithium‑iron‑phosphate (LFP) pack designed for high safety and durability. The car supports very fast DC charging. Denza claims that, with its dual‑gun fast charging setup, the battery can go from 10% to over 90% in under 10 minutes in ideal conditions.

The car also features steer‑by‑wire chassis control, removing traditional mechanical steering links. This system is meant to improve precision and response on track and at high speeds.

Unlike many traditional supercars, the Denza Z Coupe comes with a four‑seat cabin layout. At around 4.78 m long with a 2.78 m wheelbase, it mixes supercar performance with grand‑tourer‑like interior space.

What it means for Nepali buyers

BYD has already announced plans to expand the Denza brand to more global markets, and Denza models are expected in Nepal in the near future. However, the Denza Z is a very high‑end, niche product, and there is no official statement yet about its entry into Nepal.

For Nepali EV buyers, the Denza Z mainly shows how quickly Chinese manufacturers are moving into the top end of the performance EV segment. It also clearly illustrates how final prices can change between China and export markets once logistics and taxes are added.

If Denza brings more affordable models to Nepal, the technology used in the Z, such as advanced battery packs, fast charging and high‑performance electric drivetrains, could eventually filter down to future EVs sold here.
