New road-awareness feature for Ather scooters

Indian EV maker Ather Energy has announced a new "Pothole+ Alerts" road warning feature for its connected electric scooters, aimed at helping riders avoid sudden surprises on damaged roads.

According to the company, the feature will be rolled out on Ather 450X, 450 Apex and Rizta Jet models, and will also reach other Gen 2 and newer Ather scooters in the coming weeks via software update.

What Pothole+ Alerts does

The system is built to warn riders before they reach rough sections of the road. According to the announcement, it can identify:

  • Potholes and broken patches
  • Uneven or poorly built speed breakers
  • Other irregular or damaged road surfaces

When the scooter is about to enter such a section, the rider will receive:

  • A visual alert on the digital display
  • An audio warning through the scooter’s onboard speaker
  • Audio guidance relayed to Ather Halo smart helmet or a paired Bluetooth headset, where available

The feature is meant to cut down on sudden braking, improve comfort, and give riders more time to react, especially in low visibility or heavy traffic.

How it works

Ather says the system uses data collected from its network of connected scooters.

  • The scooters continuously send information about road conditions to Ather’s servers.
  • This data is processed to map bad road segments and speed breakers.
  • Updated road information is then sent back to scooters, which use it to trigger warnings in real time as riders approach these mapped points.

The same data will also be used to refine Ather’s navigation.

Better routing away from rough roads

Using the pothole and surface-quality data, Ather plans to make its navigation routes smarter, according to the announcement. The goal is to:

  • Suggest routes that avoid heavily damaged roads where possible
  • Provide smoother and potentially safer commuting options for riders

For Nepali buyers, this kind of feature is especially relevant in urban areas where road quality can change quickly and unexpected potholes and speed bumps are common.

Availability

According to Ather, Pothole+ Alerts will be available on Gen 2 and newer Ather scooters within the next few weeks via an over-the-air (OTA) update. Riders will not need to change hardware. The feature comes as a software upgrade on supported models.

For now, Ather does not officially sell scooters in Nepal, but this development shows how EV manufacturers are starting to use connected data and software updates to improve everyday riding safety and comfort. Similar features could appear on future electric scooters launched in the Nepali market.
