China has started using the world’s first pure electric mining truck powered by sodium-ion batteries at Tangshan Sanyou mine. The vehicle was handed over on August 4 and has now entered actual mining service.
The truck was jointly developed by Hina Battery and Tony Heavy Industry. It is based on the TLE120 mining truck platform and uses Hina’s Haixing sodium-ion battery system.
Key specs include a 676 kWh battery pack and cells with 165 Wh/kg energy density. Hina Battery says the truck supports DC fast charging, with a full charge taking about 20 to 25 minutes.
The company also claims the battery is built for more than 8,000 charge cycles. That matches the truck’s expected working life.
Sodium-ion technology has an edge in cold weather, so it suits open-pit mines in northern China. The truck also cuts tailpipe emissions and is quieter than diesel mining trucks.
Performance data from field use will be collected to improve future versions.
