Piaggio plans new India-made commuter scooters for 2027

Piaggio is lining up a new range of affordable commuter scooters for India, with the first launches slated for the first half of 2027 according to the company announcement. The project targets the high-volume everyday scooter segment, where price and running costs are the key deciding factors for buyers.

What Piaggio is planning

  • The scooters will use an all-new platform developed specifically for the Indian market.
  • Piaggio plans to launch multiple variants in the same family instead of starting with a single model.
  • The initial focus is India, while exports to African markets are also on the table, according to Piaggio chairman and managing director Diego Graffi.

Why this matters for buyers

Piaggio has traditionally had a stronger presence in the more premium scooter categories and has struggled to make headway in the budget commuter space. The new range is meant to narrow that gap by offering a more accessible price point. The company has not yet disclosed pricing, battery details, or engine specifications.

Rival segment

The upcoming scooters are expected to line up against popular commuter models such as the Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, and Suzuki Access. For Nepal’s two-wheeler market, this makes it a development worth keeping an eye on, as India-made scooters often become relevant in the region if Piaggio expands exports or if related models reach neighbouring markets later.

Production plan

Piaggio says production will take place at its Baramati plant near Pune, which it says has enough capacity for the new scooter lineup.

For Nepali buyers, the point is clear. Piaggio is preparing a cheaper, mainstream scooter family for 2027, but the company has not yet revealed the final model names, exact specifications, or launch prices.
