Battery Tracking System On The Cards
Nepal is weighing a separate registration and tracking system for EV batteries. Suresh Shrestha, chief of the Vehicle Testing Office, says current EV records cover only the chassis and motor number. Battery numbers stay outside the system entirely.
Every battery carries a unique identification number. Shrestha said feeding that number into official records could help authorities follow a battery through its whole life, from import to disposal. That would make it easier to trace the importer and check battery condition. It would also help keep used packs from quietly ending up in the scrap market.
EV adoption is rising, but Nepal still has no clear minimum standards or licensing guidelines for EV imports, Shrestha said. A draft framework is being prepared. It is expected to include Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Batteries sent abroad for recycling or reuse should not be treated like ordinary commercial exports, he added. A dedicated tracking system, he said, could cut down on the legal and tax complications such shipments currently face.
