BYD expands Tang family with new long-range EV
Chinese EV maker BYD has previewed a new 8-series Tang all-electric SUV, adding another large model to its Dynasty family and aiming at higher-end markets.
According to BYD's announcement and regulatory filings from China, the new Tang variant is a full-size electric SUV that will sit between the existing Tang L and the upcoming 9-series Da Tang flagship.
Size and seating
The 8-series Tang is a large vehicle, close to the dimensions of many three-row SUVs already on sale globally.
- Length: 5,045 mm
- Width: 1,980 mm
- Height: around 1,760 mm (according to the announcement)
- Wheelbase: 2,950 mm
- Seating: 5-seat and 7-seat versions planned
These figures place it in the same general size class as the Tang L, but with a focus on pure electric power and long range.
Motor, battery and performance
Regulatory information shows the new SUV uses a permanent-magnet synchronous motor with a peak output of 300 kW (about 402 hp). BYD says the top speed will be 250 km/h, which is high for a family SUV.
BYD has confirmed use of a second-generation Blade Battery (LFP chemistry) but has not yet disclosed the exact battery capacity. Based on Chinese filings and company claims:
- Claimed range: more than 800 km on the CLTC test cycle
- Battery type: BYD second-generation Blade Battery (LFP)
- BYD hints at a high-voltage system likely above 800 V, supporting what it calls "flash" high-speed DC charging
The company has also indicated that the SUV will feature BYD's DiSus-A intelligent body control/air suspension system, aimed at improving comfort and stability on rough roads.
Price and launch timing (China)
Chinese media reports and BYD briefings suggest an indicative price band of 280,000–320,000 yuan in its home market, which converts to roughly Rs 56–64 lakh before any import duties or local taxes.
The 8-series Tang is expected to officially launch in China in the second half of 2026, with sales starting after mid-year. Pre-sale details and exact variants may be updated closer to launch.
What it means for Nepali buyers
BYD already sells several EVs in Nepal, and local distributor Cimex Inc. has been actively adding new models. While there is no official confirmation yet for a Nepal launch of the 8-series Tang, its large size, 5/7-seat layout, and claimed 800+ km range make it a potentially attractive option for:
- Families wanting a spacious electric SUV
- Inter-city travellers looking for long range without frequent charging
Any future arrival in Nepal would depend on import decisions, homologation, and local pricing. For now, the 8-series Tang is a China-market preview, but it is a model Nepali EV buyers should watch as BYD expands its global SUV portfolio.
