The government has put forward a plan to rebuild 107 road intersections across the Kathmandu Valley under the Kathmandu Valley Urban Transport System Master Plan.
Prepared by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport with JICA, the proposal divides the work into two phases. 23 priority intersections are set for upgrading by 2032. The remaining 84 intersections are planned by 2040.
The estimated cost is Rs 6 billion. The first phase is expected to cost about Rs 1.5 billion, while Rs 2.75 billion is proposed for the second batch. More than Rs 1 billion is earmarked for intelligent traffic signals, roadside sensors and a central traffic management system.
Planned improvements include traffic islands, medians, curb ramps, pedestrian overpasses, bus stops, right-turn lanes, right-turn holding areas, coordinated signals, street lighting and CCTV cameras.
The priority list covers Lainchaur, Keshar Mahal, New Road, Kalimati, Sundhara, Teku, Kalanki, Balkhu, Ekantakuna, Satdobato, Dillibazar, Singha Durbar, Thapathali, New Baneshwor, Old Baneshwor, Gaushala, Chabahil, Tribhuvan International Airport, Koteshwor, Jadibuti, Gwarko, Gattaghar, Lokanthali, Kaushaltar, Sanothimi and Thimi.
