BYD Seagull hits 1 lakh production in Brazil: what it means for Nepal’s cheapest BYD EV

Chinese EV maker BYD has marked a major milestone at its Brazil plant, crossing 1 lakh new energy vehicles (NEVs) produced. The milestone car was the BYD Seagull, sold there as the Dolphin Mini. According to BYD, the Camacari factory in Bahia started passenger vehicle production in July 2025 and now has more than 5,500 workers, with a first‑phase capacity of 150,000 vehicles a year.

For Nepali buyers, this is more than distant Brazil news. The same Seagull platform is already on sale here as the BYD ATTO 1 hatchback. That global scale feeds directly into what Nepali EV owners experience over the long term.

Seagull/ATTO 1: now a true global model

In Brazil and Mexico the Seagull carries the Dolphin Mini badge, while in Europe it is sold as Dolphin Surf. According to public data, BYD is positioning this as its worldwide entry‑level EV. The Brazilian plant also hosted the rollout of BYD’s 14 millionth NEV globally, a Song Pro handed over to Brazil’s president.

For Nepal, this matters in three ways:

  • Global volume usually means stronger parts and software support for markets like Nepal, where BYD uses the same underlying hardware and battery packs.
  • High production volumes help bring manufacturing cost down, which over time can support more competitive retail prices in import‑dependent markets.
  • A globally successful model is more likely to receive long‑term updates, recalls and technical bulletins, which helps local workshops and distributors keep cars running properly.

What Nepali buyers get with ATTO 1 (Seagull)

Cimex Inc., BYD’s official distributor in Nepal, has already launched the ATTO 1 hatchback.

  • ATTO 1 Dynamic: 30.08 kWh battery, claimed range around 230 km, front motor producing about 61 PS and 135 Nm, top speed ~130 km/h, priced around Rs 28.95 lakh.
  • ATTO 1 Premium: 38.88 kWh battery, claimed range up to 300 km, similar motor output, priced around Rs 32.99 lakh.

BYD offers an extended warranty of up to 10 years or 2 lakh km on battery and motor (according to distributor information). That is unusually long coverage for the Nepali market.

Impact on Nepal’s small EV hatchback segment

The Seagull/ATTO 1 sits in the A‑segment city‑car category, competing with small EVs and high‑end petrol hatchbacks from India and China.

  • Its global success and Brazil localization increase the likelihood that critical components such as batteries and power electronics remain available for years. That is reassuring for early adopters in Nepal.
  • As BYD pushes to become Brazil’s top‑selling brand by 2030, the company’s overall scale could support future price revisions or promo offers in Nepal, especially if local rivals respond with cheaper compact EVs.

For Nepali buyers considering a first EV, the Brazil milestone signals that ATTO 1/Seagull is not an experimental niche car, but a mass‑market global product. That lowers long‑term risk and strengthens its case as a primary city runabout for Kathmandu and other urban centers.
